Are you a complete sewing newbie looking for a sewing course that will teach you essential sewing techniques, while giving you an introduction to basic dressmaking? Do you wish to gain the confidence and inspiration you need to continue to experiment and learn to create many more exciting projects? Then this course is for you! The Easy Gathered Skirt is the perfect introduction to sewing and basic dressmaking suitable for complete sewing novices and those already able to use a sewing machine alike.
On this course you will learn the very basics of sewing and of using a sewing pattern like a pro! You will then put it all into practice by making this fabulous gathered skirt in your preferred length. You will come away not only with a gorgeous new skirt, but also with a pattern fitted to your measurements and a some step by step Pdf instructions so you can make many more at home!
No previous experience is required in order to take this course. You may join this class as a complete newbie or after taking any other of our Beginners Classes. The class is taught in small groups, so there is plenty of individual attention and opportunity to chat and make friends. There will be tea and biscuits to make the process sweeter!
Class length: 6 hours taught either as two 3 hour evening sessions on weekdays, or as one whole day session at weekends. *Weekend sessions include an extra half hour to allow for a lunch break. Please bring a packed lunch with you for all day classes. We will provide tea and biscuits to keep you going 🙂
What you will learn:
- How to set up and thread a sewing machine including winding a bobbin
- How to sew straight seams
- How to troubleshoot sewing machine issues
- How to read and understand a multi-sized sewing pattern including their markings and mysterious jargon
- How to take your measurements
- How to select the right pattern size for you
- How complete simple alterations to custom fit your pattern
- How to correctly pin the pattern to your fabric and how to accurately cut it out
- How to finish seams
- How to create and attach a waistband
- How to insert elastic
- How to create a simple hem and much much more!
WHAT TO BRING:
We have a lovely selection of suitable fabrics available to purchase at very affordable prices, including some gorgeous Liberty prints! If you would rather source your fabric prior to attending the class, please refer to the quantities and types below, but please be sure to pick one of the types listed. Sourcing unsuitable fabric might result in having to buy it again from us on the day. You will also be able to purchase the necessary haberdashery from us.
22” to 28” waist:
Mid-thigh length: one 1.30m length of 150cm wide fabric, or one 150cm length of 115cm wide fabric.
Knee Length: one 1.5m length of 150cm wide fabric, or one 1.7m length of 115cm wide fabric.
30” to 36” waist:
Mid-thigh length: one 1.5m length of 150cm wide fabric or one 1.50m length of 115cm wide fabric.
Knee Length: one 1.5m length of 150m wide fabric, or one 1.7m length of 115cm wide fabric.
Recommended fabrics: Woven fabrics only (non stretchy) light to medium weight cottons such as chambray, poplin, lawn, pique’, swiss dot and gingham, lightweight denim, linen and needlecord. Please make sure your fabric is non-stretchy and to stick to one of the types listed. Sourcing unsuitable fabric might result in having to buy it again from us on the day.
*Important note: we recommend pre-washing your fabric according to manufacturers instructions prior to attending the class in order to pre-shrink it. If you are purchasing the fabric from us on the day, you will be able to steam shrink it at the beginning of the session.
